Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you no doubt will have heard this buzz phrase. The question is not so much what is Web 2.0 but what isn't Web 2.0.
From Facebook to MySpace, RSS Feeds to Podcasting, the umbrella that is 2.0 covers all of these and more. Technologies that have been around for 10 or more years crashed together causing an explosion of interactively have enabled designers and developers to put the fun into functionality. Gone are the square, boring contraptions of yester-year and in its place is the birth of fresh and exciting content displays. BRG have been using these methodologies in our mobile chat and complex business applications and compared to the previous versions, they are cleaner, more intuitive and above all, better equiped for the 21st Century.
So what has this meant for users, casually surfing the net, knowledge-free of this phonomenom? It has meant a more logical method of viewing content at a click without waiting for long periods, enduring blank screens in the process whilst the next 3 paragraphs of content slowly displays. It's those images that you click on to bring up a larger version on top of the page; the maps that allow you to scroll across the country; and the live searching done without refreshing your browser.
Industry leaders named this culmination Web 2.0 due to their imagination that this is the second incarnation of the world wide web, a re-imagination if you will, as if the scientists who built the original version went back to the drawing board and thought of the infinite possibilites. It won't suprise you that even as you read this, there are nerds out there who are already looking forward to annoucing Web 3.0; although quite when all the versions inbetween were supposed to have come and gone I'm not so sure.
